5. Gluten and refined grains
Refined grains (white bread, white pasta, white rice) have a high glycemic index, which promotes inflammation in the body. Additionally, the gluten in wheat, barley, and rye can be difficult for someone with osteoarthritis to tolerate.
Healthy alternative: Choose gluten-free whole grains, such as quinoa, buckwheat, and brown rice.
6. Too much salt
Excessive salt consumption can promote fluid retention, increase inflammation, and put pressure on joints. Highly processed foods (convenience foods, canned goods, and industrial sauces) are often high in sodium.
Healthy alternative: Use spices and herbs (turmeric, ginger, thyme) to add flavor to your dishes and take advantage of their anti-inflammatory properties.
