“This is the only contract that matters: the deed to the house where you live, which is in my name. The loan agreement ends: either you start paying market rent or you leave in a month.
” “Are you going to leave us on the street with a baby?” Elena cried.
“I’m not leaving you on the street. I’m raising you to be adults.”
Then I asked Marcos for the keys to the truck he showed off as a symbol of his success.
“I’m not giving you anything,” he threatened. “I’m going to call the police.”
“Go ahead. Everything’s in my name. You’re the one who’s going to look bad.”
Finally, he lowered his head, picked up the keys from the floor, and handed them to me. That humiliation was the first brick to fall from his castle of air.
When they left, I knew they wouldn’t stay put. I needed to protect myself. I called my friends, my “lionesses”: retired businesswomen, a lawyer, women who also knew about family feuds.
Protection: law, documents and strategy
With Matilde, my lawyer friend, we made the plan:
The next day I voluntarily underwent a psychiatric evaluation with the most respected expert. I left with an impeccable certificate: lucid mind, intact abilities.
I changed my will: all my assets went into a trust in my grandson Santi’s name, managed by an external board. Elena would no longer have control over my money.
I cancelled powers of attorney and cards, changed the locks on Marcos’s premises, and legally blocked his access.
Meanwhile, reality hit them hard:
Marcos found his office door locked by court order, his clients turning their backs on him, and his secretary quitting.
Elena was humiliated at the supermarket when her card declined and she had to leave her cart full of diapers and food.
I didn’t enjoy their pain, but I did feel a sense of justice. It was the first time they, and not I, were paying the price for their decisions.
The dirtiest attempt: declaring myself crazy
The lowest move came one afternoon: Marcos showed up with a private ambulance, a “doctor,” and two nurses. They wanted to forcibly remove me from my house, sedate me, and take me to a clinic so they could later claim I was incapacitated and try to seize my assets.
They broke down my door, the nurses held my arms, and the doctor prepared a syringe. As my joints ached and fear gripped my chest, I remembered Matilde’s advice: “Record everything and don’t let them touch you.”
I recorded, I screamed, I resisted… and at that moment, real sirens were heard: the police. Matilde had called and arrived with them.
Result:
Marcos arrested for trespassing, attempted kidnapping, and assault.
The doctor and nurses are under investigation.
The video, the gold standard.
At the police station, Elena arrived with the baby in her arms, crying and asking me to drop the charges “for Santi’s sake”.
Instead, I showed him three pieces of paper:
My psychiatric certificate that proved I wasn’t crazy.
The modification of my will and the trust in the name of your son.
The divorce papers that she herself ended up signing later, after discovering the gambling debts and the dangers surrounding Marcos.
That day I didn’t just protect my property. I protected my grandson’s life and, although she didn’t understand it immediately, Elena’s life as well.
